Elen Lay Hawkins was a widow living in Bexar Co TX at the time probate was filed on her mother’s estate (10 June 1887).287 It has not been possible to find her, or any of her known children, in the 1900 census. She is seen as a hotel keeper in the 1910 census:

The address of the hotel was 408 W. Commerce Street.

The 39-year old daughter was recorded as Zada but it looks more like Zula, which agrees with the 1880 census.

She appears to have died before June 28, 1918, as she was not mentioned in the obituary of her brother, Francis Marion Lay.232
